4 Benefits of Cone Beam Technology

One of the newest technologies in the industry, the Cone Beam 3-D Dental Imaging System generates dental x-rays in 3-D, high-definition quality. From diagnosis to the creation of dental implants, our own periodontist, Dr. J. Alexander Withers, uses the technology to ensure each implant is as beneficial as possible. Cone beam technology offers several benefits for doctors and patients alike.

Clearer Images

Many periodontists are turning to cone beam technology because of the clearer pictures it creates. The sharp images have a higher resolution than traditional x-rays can provide and allows for a better diagnosis of infections, tumors and cysts. It can also be used to diagnose airway issues that could indicate sleep apnea as well as impacted teeth.

Easily Differentiate Between Tissue and Nerves

X-rays do not allow periodontists to easily differentiate between a patient’s tissue and his or her nerves. Because this advanced technology provides a more accurate look at the patient’s mouth, detection of problems is usually done much sooner.

Non-Invasive and Faster Procedure

Traditional x-rays require a patient to be exposed to radiation for several minutes at a time, but the Cone Beam 3-D Dental Imaging System only takes between 10 and 40 seconds. This means a patient receives about 10 times less radiation than he or she would if getting a basic dental x-ray. Since the procedure is so quick, it is also less likely to cause pain or discomfort.

Lowers the Risk of Surgery Complications

In the past dental x-rays did not provide an accurate enough picture for periodontists to fit a patient with dental implants. The accuracy of cone beam technology means a patient’s implants are more likely to fit perfectly because they will truly be created specifically for his or her mouth—no guesswork required. Since a precise surgery plan can be created, it is usually more effective and less likely to see any kind of complication during or after the procedure.
